Modeled after Maria Shriver’s Just Who Will You Be, Queen Latifah’s goal withPut On Your Crown is to help young women build a strong sense of self-esteem. A US Dept. of Justice survey found that females ages 16-24 are more vulnerable to partner violence than any other group, almost triple the national average. Cases like Chris Brown’s assault on pop star Rihanna showed an ugly side of adolescent life. However, Queen Latifah has always been a shining example of a woman happy with herself and unwilling to compromise to fit into the “hollywood ideal” of what a confident beautiful woman should look like.

Review:

I like self help books and when they talk to me in such a way that they sound like a friend, instead of telling me how they think I should do things, then that is the book for me. Put on Your Crown is a self help book that is enjoyable and it was like a friend speaking to me. In this instance, it was also entertaining and fun, just like I thought it would be from Queen Latifah. I adore Queen Latifah. There is just something about her. She is "every woman".

Queen Latifah wants, and succeeds, to use her personal experiences to inspire women to take the lead in their lives in her book. The purpose of this book was to raise the self-esteem of young women.

The book starts out as self-help and also touches on an ‘almost’ autobiography. The book is divided into several chapters; Success, Beauty, Money, Love, Fear, Loss, Strength, and Joy, and in each, she shows the reader just how she came to wear the “crown”.

This book is written for young females, whom she wants to inspire and lead with the lessons learned. Queen Latifah discusses the ups and downs particular to her own life and how she was able to pull through these situations and use them to, not only learn form but to teach and inspire others. One topic that she touched on that I find particularly important to teach women of all ages and walks of life is how she went broke and the lessons learned, “manage your own money; sign your own checks; and achieve financial sophistication.”

She may be a celebrity to you and I; but she is also someone who has experienced the same pitfalls and that the female reader has experienced, or will experience in their lifetime.

This was not written as a show-offy, here is my celebrity life book. Her intention is to inspire young (all) women to reach for their dreams and uses several life experiences in each section of her book to show how to deal with and not let negative experiences drag you down or to prevent achieving goals in life.

I highly recommend this book for all ages as there are lessons for everyone. If you have a daughter, get her a copy!
