ISBN13: 9780982704318

What would it take of you to believe in your child when nobody else did?  What would you do if all of a sudden your son truly believed with all of his heart that he was indeed the New Real Santa Claus?

About the Book:
One day little Nicholas wandered away from his mom and his sister while they were out shopping because he has always felt mostly invisible in comparison to his sister Holly. Little Nicholas meets an old man sitting on a bench at the mall. This old man tells Nicholas he is Santa Claus and that he is very sick and dying. Santa Claus also tells Nicholas he will now be the new real Santa Claus and the elves would be in touch with him shortly. Little Nicholas believes this old man a hundred and ten percent that he is to become the new real Santa Claus. Enjoy this journey into a little boy’s imagination as he struggles in a world of doubt, continuously striving to turn non believers into believers. I believe my son is the new real Santa Claus no matter what other people may believe. The question is, do you believe?

About the Author:
Californian Kristy Haile earned an Associate’s degree in Dental Hygiene from Northeastern University in Boston and then worked as a hygienist in Massachusetts and California. She moved from her hometown of Turlock, CA to Los Angeles, where her two children became actors on TV (The Office, Criminal Minds, Desperate Housewives), movies (Chihuahua: The Movie) and in commercials. At age 4, son Ty came to believe he was Santa Claus. Haile kept a journal of the funny and unusual things her son said and did over the next two years, as well as of people’s reactions to his self-identification as the “new real Santa Claus.” That journal was the basis for her latest book, I Am Santa. You can visit the ‘I AM SANTA!’ website atwww.iamsantabook.com to connect with Kristy.

Excerpt:

I woke up early the next morning to the sound of Nicholas running into my room screaming, “I just went to the North Pole….I just went to the North Pole!” I looked at the clock on my night stand noticing it was only four o’clock in the morning. Nicholas was wide awake trying to tell me all about the North Pole. So I tiredly told my little Nicholas, “Go back to bed.” But Nicholas continued with his story, “Mimi, Mimi it was so awesome! At first I just thought that I was dreaming, but the elves told me that I was really at the North Pole. I asked the elves why I was picked to be the new Santa Claus. And you know what? They said it was because I am so special because I have a good and generous heart. Me, Mimi I was picked because I am special, me Mimi, I am special! I always knew sissy was special, but I never knew I was special!” What was Nicholas saying? Didn’t he know he was special too just like his sissy? And wait, why was he calling me Mimi? So I inquisitively asked, “Nicholas sweetheart of course you are special you are a very special little boy and why are you calling me Mimi?” Nicholas didn’t answer my question he simply continued to beg me to get out of bed so he could tell me all about his recent adventure to the North Pole. I was still very tired and at first I didn’t feel much like getting out of bed, but I was more intrigued about his so called adventure to the North Pole as well as why he kept calling me Mimi than I was tired. I finally got up and went into the living room with Nicholas so I could listen to his story and find out why he kept calling me Mimi. Nicholas told me about how his exciting adventure began with the elves coming and waking him up in the middle of the night because they told him he needed to get familiar with his new ‘kingdom’. Nicholas told me at first he thought he was just having the best dream ever, but when he tried to wake himself up he couldn’t. He finally had asked one of the elves if he was dreaming. But the elf told him he was awake and it just seemed like a dream because the North Pole is the most magical place ever! I asked how he got to the North Pole and Nicholas informed me that the elves arrived into his bedroom through a special porthole in his closet. Then the elves had taken him back through the porthole to get to the North Pole. I wanted to see this porthole but I didn’t want to impinge on his imagination at all so I didn’t ask to see it. Nicholas did tell me later on in his adventure story that the porthole is located in his closet but can only be seen and used by either the elves or himself, the new real Santa Claus. Nicholas continued telling me all about the North Pole, “Mimi there was tons of white fluffy snow at the North Pole and it didn’t freeze my fingers when I picked it up. Everything at the North Pole is covered in snow except for the candy. The candy has a little snow on it, but I liked the snow most of all Mimi and I even used the snow to build a big gigantic snowman with some of the elves. My snowman looked so real that I really thought is was going to come to life but it didn’t. At least it didn’t come to life when I was there maybe it was waiting or something, I don’t know but it was really, really cool.”

This is a heartwarming story about a little boy and his mom and how she let him be what he wanted to be, no matter who that is.  Her  love for her children came through on the pages as you read and you discover that she never discouraged her son's imagination, an important skill for any mom.  She is a great story teller, telling of family events in a way that was not only believable, but readable.  Every parent can relate to her and her son in the heartwarming book.

Book Review: JAMES BEARD AMERICAN COOKERY

9780316098687_154X233

JAMES BEARD AMERICAN COOKERY
  • By James Beard
  • Category: Cooking
  • Pages: 896
  • Publish Date: 10/25/2010
  • Price: $35.00/$43.00
  • Publisher: Little, Brown and Company
  • ISBN: 9780316098687
James Beard was the “dean of American cookery” (New York Times), and he put practically everything he learned about cooking into this single magnificent–now classic–cookbook. JAMES BEARD’S AMERICAN COOKERY includes more than fifteen hundred of his favorite and most successful recipes, as well as advice on dozens of cooking questions, from choosing meats and vegetables to preserving fruit and making real cheeseburgers. A celebration of the roots of cooking in the American style, this repackaged edition features the original text and color illustrations, and a new foreword by Tom Colicchio. Like Mastering the Art of French Cooking and The Joy of Cooking, it is a standard reference no kitchen is complete without.

James Beard's American Cookery is an extremely comprehensive cookbook.  It is rather large, and has recipes for an amazing variety of foods.  It is over 800 pages long, and includes chapters on everything from cocktail food, soups, sauces, and breads to candy.   The sections of the book contain more than just recipes, but also an introduction, history and basic cooking facts.  The wealth of information makes this a wonderful reference book to have.  I used it last weekend to make beef stew, a classical American dish, and it was excellent.
Cicely’s Beef Stew
Ingredients
  • 4 lbs beef cut into 2 inch cubes
  • flour
  • 1 onion stuck with 2 cloves
  • 1 leek
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 small turnip
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 t. thyme
  • water or beef stock
  • 6 carrots, scraped and cut thin
  • 12 small white onions
  • 3 ribs celery, cut in thin strips
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 2 medium potatoes, diced
  • 1 T. salt
  • 1 t. pepper
Directions
Brown the floured beef cubes very well in beef fat or the oil and butter mixture.  Add the onion stuck with cloves, the leek, the carrot, turnip, herbs and water or stock to cover.  Bring to a boil and reduce heat.  Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours or until the meat begins to become tender.  Add the carrots, onions, celery, garlic, potatoes and salt and pepper.  Cook until meat is thoroughly tender.  Correct the seasoning.
This is old fashioned cooking, cooking my husband loves. Lack of pictures is a drawback.  Overall, I think this book is an excellent cookbook and reference, but I feel it will appeal more to experienced cooks rather than beginners or even those looking for quick family meals.  It would make an excellent Christmas present for a friend or relative who enjoys cooking meals for their family.

Book Review: A Christmas Carol: A Pop-Up Book

A Christmas Carol: A Pop-Up Book (Pop Up Book)
Title: A Christmas Carol: A pop-up Book
Author: Charles Dickens, Chuck Fischer
ISBN: 9780316039734
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company
Genre: Children

Not your typical kids pop-up book, this is a gift that is perfect for any child. It was one that I had wanted to share with my children, and the opportunity arose to review it. It's all about the magic of Christmas and also teaches the lesson of being kind to others.

This book is designed for older children and it’s not just a picture book. The pop-ups are very intricate. Each pop-up page has a separate booklet that fits in a pocket in the page and tells about the part of the story that the page depicts. It is a very enjoyable book that will easily become a family heirloom!

This beautiful re-imagining of Charles Dickens' timeless fable, A Christmas Carol: A Pop-Up Book features artist Chuck Fischer's richly painted depictions of the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, brought to life in intricate pop-up scenes by paper engineer Bruce Foster. The entire text of A Christmas Carol is reproduced in five removable, illustrated, keepsake booklets. An introductory booklet provides a biography of Dickens and an illustrated feature on the enduring appeal of this beloved story. The perfect gift, A Christmas Carol, now in pop-up form, will brighten the holidays for young and old.

This is one of those books that you read to your children and display throughout the holidays. It is a simply stunning depiction of A Christmas Carol. . It's not your typical, lift-the-flap pop-up book or one of those where a few images pop-up. Instead it's like a 3-D book. The whole page comes to life! On each page, there is a little miniature book with a story about each section of the book. For example, there is a book for each ghost that Scrooge meets. My kids are small, so I am just showing the book. When my kids are older I will read one of the little books a night. It will be the start of a wonderful tradition.

Buy it: This book will be released on November 10 and will be available in most local bookstores and online. You can even pre-order it from Amazon. The SRP is $30.00US and $36.00CAN.

Book Review: 5 Ingredient Fix

9780446572095 388X586 5 Ingredient Fix Review
Summary: Claire Robinson, the hot new Food Network star of 5 Ingredient Fix and Food Network Challenge, helps people get dinner on the table with little fuss and a few great ingredients. The quest for simple, affordable, and fresh, mouthwatering food is over. 5 INGREDIENT FIX helps put delicious and sophisticated meals on the table in a snap. With people struggling to simplify, streamline, and budget, the Food Network's Claire Robinson is here to help. Cooking doesn't have to be complicated to be impressive; simplifying the process with fewer ingredients saves time, frustration, and ultimately, money.-- Grand Central Life & Style
I just LOVE to watch cooking shows, especially those on the Food Network. I started watching them and cooking with my husband after we got married and when the opportunity arises for us to review a cookbook, I jump at the chance.  When given the opportunity to review 5 Ingredient Fix: Easy, Elegant, and Irresistible Recipes By Claire Robinson, I knew I had to say yes. She is a favorite of ours. Claire has her own show on Food Network (5 Ingredient Fix) and she’s been on Food Network Challenge. Anytime there is a cookbook that calls for 5 ingredients or less, I'm immediately interested. And when it also has the word "easy" in the title, I'm pretty much sold. So it's natural that I was intrigued by the new cookbook 5 INGREDIENT FIX: EASY, ELEGANT, AND IRRESISTIBLE RECIPES by Claire Robinson. A cookbook containing quick and easy recipes with few ingredients sounded ideal for my family's busy lifestyle!

We found 5 INGREDIENT FIX to be a wonderful addition to our cookbook collection. Of course, there are the typical cookbook chapters you'd expect: appetizers, soups and salads, main dishes, sides, and desserts, but, unique to this are additional categories.  Such as breakfast foods and cocktails and "nibbles." Claire also has a section in the back of the book which gives readers menu ideas to make memorable meals. I especially liked that for each recipe, the five ingredients were printed across the top of the page for a quick as a easy reference.

The photography in this cookbook is stunning and surely makes you want to try each and every recipe. I won’t even buy a cookbook without photos, but these photos really make this one special. It's truly a gorgeous book.

There were quite a few main dish recipes that I wanted to try; but we started with the Buttermilk Pecan Chicken. We found this to be a simple recipe and made a great family night meal. We really enjoyed the meal and will be making it a family staple.

Now, we haven’t yet tried the Maple Whipped Sweet Potatoes with Caramelized Onions, but we will be making it for the holidays. We want something different to set apart our sweet potato dish from the usual.
Maple Whipped Sweet Potatoes with Caramelized Onions

4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped into rough chunks
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons pure grade B maple syrup
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, divided
2 teaspoons kosher salt plus more as needed
1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper plus more as needed
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 large Vidalia onion or other sweet onion, thinly sliced

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Put the sweet potatoes, 1/4 cup maple syrup, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper in a large mixing bowl. Toss to evenly coat and transfer to a baking sheet; roast in the oven until the sweet potatoes are soft, 35 to 40 minutes. Check on them after 15 and stir, if needed.

Meanwhile, melt the butter and 2 tablespoons olive oil together in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onion and 2 tablespoons maple syrup and season with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onion is deep golden brown, about 10 minutes, adding water, a tablespoon at a time, if the skillet gets too dry. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Transfer the sweet potatoes to a food processor and add a tablespoon of hot water. Pulse until just blended and then add half the caramelized onion. Pulse a few more seconds to incorporate the onion; for a very smooth puree, add another tablespoon of water and run the machine for 1 minutes. Fold in the remaining caramelized onions, reserving some for garnish.

Serve in a warm dish and garnish with the reserved caramelized onion.

If you are like us and enjoy cookbooks with quick and easy recipes, great for families, then I suggest picking up 5 INGREDIENT FIX.

What I think: This book is based on extensive knowledge and experience. It comes highly praised. I found the method easy to follow, and, as I need to loose a few pounds, this will be incorporated into my daily routine. Typical of this type of book, she has included recipes. What is not so typical is that the recipes are such that the majority will enjoy as well as easily obtain ingredients needed.

I am a fan of mystery novels, however I am not a fan of the predictable novel. You know the kind. Where you are around mid-point and already you know who it is. Not in Last To Die! Kate Brady did a wonderful job tying me up in this book and I did not want to put it down.  There are plot twists and turns.  I had not foreseen this ending and was kept guessing until the end!! That is a sign of an excellent writer! In addition, the writing is so vivid that I did not want to read this at night or alone! I have not read Kate's other books but I will now be on the lookout to pick them up! I am now a huge fan!

  • HER TOUCH IS DEADLY
As the only female Seminus demon ever born, master assassin Sinead Donnelly is used to being treated like an outcast. She spent decades enslaved, and now vows she’ll die before she’ll relinquish her freedom again. Then Sin’s innate ability to kill her enemies goes awry: She creates a lethal new werewolf virus that sparks a firestorm of panic and violence.
    HIS HUNGER CAN’T BE DENIED
Half-werewolf, half-vampire Conall Dearghul is charged with bringing in Sin to face punishment for the plague. And she’s no stranger: He’s bound to her by blood, and the one sexual encounter they shared has left him hungering for her raw sensuality. Worse, Sin is the underworld’s most wanted and Con soon learns he’s the only one who can help her . . . and that saving her life might mean sacrificing his own.

After reading the other books in the Demonica series, my expectations for Sin Undone were quite high. I am pleased to say that it met my high expectations. Larissa Ione has built a wonderful series that has kept us wanting more. In this series, the Seminus demon we're following along with is female, the only Seminus demon female ever born. Sinead "Sin" Donelly has fast become my favorite character and is the ultimate romance novel heroine.

If you have not read the first four books in the series, I highly recommend them. Yet, Sin Undone is an excellent stand-alone novel.
