2010

It's the end of another year. A year gone by so quickly. Another year of a crazy, busy life. I started my blog, a pay cut due to economy, babies, hospital visits. Many house makeover projects (many more to come) , a heart murmur scare in an infant, another celebrated his first birthday.
I've selected my favorite photos and I've put together a year in photos. I hope y'all have a wonderful new year, and may we all make great efforts to achieve bigger and better crafts & makeovers and have many new ideas, all with minimal exertion but much success!

See you next year!

DIY Projects for the Year Checklist:

Here is my DIY list for this year:
(I have a year but want it now LOL )
Painting all the walls and ceilings.
Making new art for my walls
Making throw pillows
De-cluttering and organizing my spaces.
Placing more items into bins and closed storage
Laundry room- I would love the built-in as seen on {Show and Tell}.
For lack of what else to call it, 2 coat racks. I picked up some really great knobs for the ‘hooks’.
Clock. This is to sell not to keep. Not my style but when I saw it I thought it would make a great clock.
Pantry- For the pantry, I want new wood shelves that are a better use for the space.
Currently there are wire shelves and they do not utilize the entire width. I also would like to
replace the bi-fold door with a swing door and add a storage organizer with the plans found on Anawhite.com.
Replace closet doors in two smaller bedrooms with swing doors. Hubby says this can be accomplished but will
require a little more planning and work on his part than the door to the pantry.
We are considering a replacement of the bathroom vanity with a dresser.
Learn how to use my cricut.
Make 4x4 candle holders

Mozaik Service for 8: Review

PlatesI don’t know about you and your family, but in my home for the holidays, we entertain on a large scale. Even Christmas day, our home is filled with friends and family. The more, the merrier. We have tables and tables of food. This year, I was given the opportunity to use Mozaik for my holiday get together. Mozaik allows you to be festive with ease!  I set my holiday dessert table with Mozaik this year and can tell you I had comments on the beautiful platters. No one suspected the platters used were disposable!  The table looked elegant.  The best part of Mozaik is that you just toss when done for cleanup.
 mozaik dinner service giveaway
Mozaik can also be a solution when you don’t have enough dinnerware,  and still look elegant. The 40-piece “party in a box” adds eight place settings (forks, knives and spoons, salad plates and dinner plates) and can be used alone for those that have no holiday dishes or is great to add for an existing set when it is limited and for every small cocktail party to a large holiday buffet.

appetizer wareMozaik is designed to look like your real permanent dish ware, yet it is actually plastic party ware that can be washed and reused, or simply disposed of. That was the hard part for me. It can really be great for cleanup if you just toss, however, they look that great that you won’t want to toss. It is an affordable alternative to adding to your current place settings. Mozaik is available in both Classic and Contemporary styles. They currently have products ranging from plates (round & square), to cutlery (that looks like real silver) and platters, creating a nicer impression at any occasion.

Mozaik dinnerware is a great option for someone juststarting out, who can’t afford a set of dinnerware just yet.  While they are great for people who just want to toss, in this instance Mosaik dishes and utensils can be washed and reused several times.  You can get a  service for eight for around $12.  You can find Mozaik products at many super markets, and many other retailers (click here for locations).

Stop by WEtv’s Designing Spaces site to see Debi Marie meet Jennifer Lucas from Sabert Corp, and how Mozaik plastic ware will become part of an upscale party without the host using any chinaware or silver cutlery.

The Next Thing in Beautiful Entertaining

I received a party pack from Mozaik and MyBlogSpark to review. I was not paid for my review and the opinions are my own.

A Homemade, Handcrafted Gift

Remember I posted that I was swamped with family and projects and would be unable to post? One such project was rather large, we started LATE, and it made a great gift after all was said and done. We have a family member that moved into a new home that has a LARGE kitchen that needed something such as an island. This was a task we felt we could complete.

We had picked up a new kitchen cabinet at Salvation Army to use but it was brown. Not a problem for us, but we came across a white one on clearance. Off to a great start!

I had the vision but too many projects on my plate. I gave my hubby my plan and he completed the island. I wanted to cover the sides and back with bead board and trim it out to beef it up.

I wanted great looking feet as well. When you go look at furniture, you love the thick, round, great looking feet, right? While at the orange box I found a foot that was cute but not... thick...round. Well, I saw another piece and it hit me. We"ll put the two together and make a great foot!

Here are those beefed up feet completed. What do you think?

{front}

The top was purchased at Ikea. They will be putting bar stools on each end. It was quite difficult to find a top that we wanted and we had tried to find granite tiles but no longer can find them.

Hubby worked hard to finish this with all that we already had on our plates. I think he did a great job!

Christmas Gifts

One of my Christmas gifts this year was a Babycakes Cupcake Maker. I LOVE cupcakes. Love the way they taste, look, everything about them. I made a batch of cupcakes so I could test my new Babycakes maker. I was a little leery as I find these types of appliances usually do not live up to my expectations.

It exceeded my expectations! It baked the cupcakes quickly and evenly without over baking! I am HIGHLY pleased with it! Within the box was the cupcake maker, instruction booklet with a couple of recipes, frosting bag and tips, pie and tartlet cutter.

I baked the cupcakes using a Paula Deen cupcake mix I picked up at the Dollar Tree. I was hesitant because I thought there was a reason it ended up at the Dollar Tree. Boy, was I wrong! WOW! They were delish! The frosting was purchased at Aldi, pre-colored! It also exceeded my expectations! (Frosting was applied with a Wilton tip).

Oh, and as a side note: in the background you will see my new stove. Ugh! Such an ordeal! We were in the middle of making my dough art ornaments when the oven blew up. I heard a pop and my husband had been looking at the oven and saw a small flame ignite upon the pop and immediately go out. This was on Christmas Eve Eve! Needless to say, we immediately went on a hunt for a stove. We were already behind and this threw us even further behind.

Do you have a special story from this holiday?

Barbara’s Bakery Review

As someone who had heard about Barbara’s Bakery but never tried, I was anxious to get the chance.
healthy snacks,
Barbara's Baked Puffs
In 1971, when Barbara started our company, the Bay Area was buzzing with young people full of a desire to express their love for all people. The world was changing daily as they created their own paths and sought to turn others onto new directions. Barbara, then 17, found her calling in real food and opened a small natural bakery in northern California. She had a simple plan—make wholesome food taste incredibly delicious. Inspired by good health, family and the kitchen table as the cornerstones of the good life, she used whole grains and oats just as nature intended—free from anything artificial. Barbara selected her ingredients carefully to allow vital vitamins and minerals to do their best to impart their healthy benefits.
The bakery exceeded her wildest dreams and grew from a storefront start-up to a thriving wholesale business. Since those first loaves more than 40 years ago, our product offerings have grown to include cereals, snack bars, cookies, crackers, and cheese puffs.
Today, a few of us wish we still wore flowers in our hair like Barbara did. And, we know our mission is clear: healthy people, naturally. We carry on Barbara’s commitment to create the best-tasting natural products free of artificial preservatives and ingredients, hydrogenated oils, and refined white sugar.
I want to be able to enjoy snacks and allow my kids to enjoy, without the worries of of preservatives and additives. I like have options for healthy alternatives to serve my family. With Barbara’s Bakery products, taste is not compromised for health!.
Barbara’s Bakery has a new look and new packaging and they are saying “NO” to the bad stuff and YES to natural foods. And, just what does this mean exactly? It means that they say no to Hydrogenated Oils, Artificial Flavors, Artificial Preservatives, Refined Sugar, Trans Fats, Artificial Additives, and High Fructose Corn Syrup. Isn't that great!
Through my affiliation with Family Review Network, I was given the opportunity to review Barbara's Bakery. They sent several products for me to try. The family enjoyed trying the cereals:  Cranberry and multi-grain Puffins.  The Cranberry cereal is high in fiber, very important.  The taste was great and they did not skimp on the cranberries.  The Puffins cereal also tasted great. Not only multi-grain, they are also available in Peanut Butter, Cinnamon, Original, Honey Rice and Fruit Medley. The Puffins story for your enjoyment:
We got the name for our cereals from a long-time employee who fell in love with puffins (the birds) on an Alaskan trip. They inspired us to fledge a flock of delicious wheat-free Puffins cereals with a crunch that’s almost as amazing as the birds they were named for! The best part of a Puffins breakfast is the hearty crunch, followed by a satisfied morning powered by naturally sweet grains. Playful as their namesake, Puffins cereals are equally delicious swimming in a bowl of milk or scooped up by the handful. And now, with the kids in mind: super delicious, always nutritious Puffin Puffs, now made with prebiotics!
Included in my package was Snackimals! My little man is NOT a fan of animal crackers and I was looking for an alternative. These little cookies are cute renditions of animal crackers and he LOVED them. I will definitely keep these on hand.  Snackimals are made with the highest of quality ingredients without artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or trans fats.
While Barbara’s Bakery has a huge selection of cereals and snacks, they have something for just about every dietary need. You can purchase Barbara’s Bakery items online, or at your local grocery store.

Mrs. Butterworth’s Syrup Limited Edition Holiday Bottles {Review and Giveaway}

collectible Mrs. Butterworth's bottles

Mrs. Butterworth's syrup has been a family favorite in our home for many years. Now, that family favorite not only tastes fantastically festive, dressed to the nines for the holidays! This year, Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup comes in three limited edition holiday bottles this year: The Caroler, Mrs. Claus, and The Gift Giver.

From my affiliation with the Family Review Network, I was given the opportunity to receive the new decorative Mrs. Butterworth's holiday edition. I received a limited edition bottle and it is adorable. I had to show it around and let everyone see!

The holidays are a magical time and I am all about finding new traditions and continuing established traditions. One such tradition is to have pancakes and french toast Christmas morning, and this year will be no different. Sometimes it is the smallest things that can make it  memorable! Mrs. Butterworth's, all dressed up, will be attending our Christmas morning breakfast!

Regardless of everyday dress or holiday dress, this syrup, with it's classic rich and delicious taste, will continue to be invited to dine with us all year long.

Goodwill Pricing

Goodwill Industries International logo

Bloggers have talked awhile now about the inconsistencies with the prices at their Goodwill stores. I have run across this several times in my area. Part of what bothers me about the pricing issues is that I KNOW needy people are also shopping at these stores. I know that the money raised from these donated items do go to a good and worthy cause, yet I think they need to keep their shoppers in mind when pricing.

Recently, I was at the Goodwill in St. Lucie West Florida. A man and his wife were shopping for a table. In fact, it was a table I wanted but they’d beat me to it. I could hear their conversation and knew they were having money trouble. They tried to talk the manager down but the manager would not hear it. This couple needed a table. They didn’t just want it like me. He was disabled and without a job. None of this affected the manager. He just did not care. They did end up paying what the manager wanted, but I wondered at what cost to them?

Some of the stores are also not being honest. At this store, I had been watching an item. Those of us ‘thrifters’ that are regulars at Goodwill know how it works. They have a ticket that they price the item and mark the date. So this particular item, as I said, I was watching. I knew what I wanted to pay and, well, if it got away, that was the risk I took. However, two or three weeks out, the ticket changes. A new ticket was put on with that had that days date with the full price. I have also found that whether or not they haggle with you will depend upon on their mood. Some days they are happy as a clam and will state a fair or even great price.  Then you may come in a day that they have had a bad day and they won’t even consider it.

I know that they are not all this way. It seems just the ones that I shop at in South Florida are inconsistent, over-priced, etc.  I have come across a few great sites that I’d love to pass along to you in your quest for good deals. The first is The Thrift Shopper. Here you can search their locator for thrift stores in your area, there is a forum for discussion on all things thrift (they have even discussed the inconsistencies and over pricing), etc. It really is a great site. For those of you in the DC area, you lucky dogs, there is a great priced Goodwill and they have their own blog called DC Goodwill Fashionista. I say lucky dogs because, if you take a look at their blog, the prices are amazing. I am jealous :) If you google Goodwill, a lot of information comes up from their own websites to people discussing pricing. I came across one in which an employee was disheartened by Goodwill Industries.

Although it can be frustrating, I will not stop my quest for beautiful things at a great price. I love ‘thrifting’.
